In 1996 Thomas suffered prolapse of two of his vertebrae, which meant he lost his job and became very depressed. However, he started to volunteer his help in his hospital gym, which also helped with his own rehabilitation. Despite suffering considerable pain he persevered, uncomplaining, and completed the level 3 NVQ in personal training. He is now the Deputy Manager at Barrow Community Gym where he has helped very many people with serious physical and mental health problems to rehabilitate and to lead active lives once again.
